Buying a new washing machine: what should you pay attention to?

Are you going to buy a new washing machine? There is now so much supply on the market that it is easy to lose the overview. How do you know which washing machine is most suitable for you? By paying attention to, among other things:

The larger your household, the more kilograms of laundry your machine must be able to handle. The filling weight is therefore important in your choice. A household of 1 to 2 people can make good progress with a washing machine with a 7 kg load capacity . If you have 1 or 2 children, it is better to buy a washing machine with a capacity of at least 8 kilos . A machine for 9 kilos or more does not shy away from the amount of laundry of a family larger than 4 people. So take a look at your (future) family composition before you buy a washing machine.

Rpm

The speed of a washing machine indicates how many rounds per minute the drum makes during the spin cycle. The higher the speed, the drier your laundry comes out of the machine. Do you want to dry your laundry as gently as possible? Then a washing machine with 1200 rpm will suffice . At 1400 rpm , your laundry still contains 50% moisture after spinning, so it still has to be on the line for a while. Don’t like to hang the laundry? Then choose 1600 rpm . Your laundry will then come out of the drum the driest.

Washing machine type

Which type of washing machine do you choose? Are you going for a top loader or a front loader? Top loaders are great for small spaces because the opening is at the top. They are also a bit narrower and higher, so you don’t have to bend over as much. With a front loader, you open the machine at the front. Handy if you want to put a dryer on top, for example! This type can also hold more laundry than a top loader. The front loader is generally the most sold.

Washing/drying combination or separate appliance

If you want to wash and dry, you can choose from a separate washing machine and dryer , or a washer/dryer combination . With a washer/dryer combination, your laundry is clean and dry in the same drum. So you only need 1 device. Ideal for small spaces and cheaper to purchase. However, two separate devices have more drying capacity, are much more energy-efficient in use and you have clean and dry clothes faster.

Noise level

The place where you place your washing machine can influence the desired noise level. The time when you wash the most can also play a role in your choice. The less decibels, the quieter the machine. Do look at the number of dB when spinning, since the machine makes the most noise then. If you want an extra quiet washing machine, go for a maximum of 71 decibels. 72-73 dB is quiet and 74-77 dB is normal. The noise level can be found on the energy label.

Energy efficiency

Do you want to save money and contribute to a better environment? Then pay attention to the energy class and consumption of your new washing machine. The more energy-efficient the machine, the more you save on energy costs per month. From March 2021, all washing machines are required to have a new energy label. Previously, most appliances were in the A++ or A+++ energy class . You will no longer find the pluses on the new labels, because it is now measured differently. The washing machine is therefore no less economical, but the difference between them is clearer. Miele has a lot of choice in machines with an A-label, see here an overview.
